On the road to Romania

Help us to help others – Ajuta-ne sa-i ajutam pe altii

Papageno is a Swiss-run organization that helps underprivileged people in Sibiu, Romania. Their institutions and activities include an orphanage, providing food and tutors to homeless children and distributing small household goods. They also plan to build a nursing home in the near future.

Our KPMG 100th anniversary project aims to achieve growth and giving – Dezvoltare si Sprijin – by contributing to Papageno’s efforts while raising CHF 15,000 for KPMG’s Inspiration Grants – two great causes.

Here is how you can help us. We will be collecting goods from 30 August through 3 September that will be delivered to Sibiu. We ask you to donate:
- Men’s, women’s, children’s clothing and shoes (clean)
- Non-perishable food items (e.g. rice, flour, noodles)
- Toiletries (e.g. toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, razors)
- Sheets and towels (clean)
- School and art supplies (e.g. crayons, drawing paper, glue, pencils)
- Baby strollers
- Toys
- Small pieces of furniture (e.g. chairs, tables)

How it works:
All KPMG Zurich employees will receive a flyer with all necessary information, along with a bag for donated goods. Simply bring items to your KPMG main reception. You can also bring your donated items to the project owners: Stuart Robertson, Bryan DeBlanc, Doug Mullins, Charly Errico, Emad Bibawi or Bianka Wilson. If you have not received a bag or would like more than one, please contact Helen Suter, hsuter@kpmg.com.

Stuart, Bryan, Doug, Charly, Emad and Bianka are all planning to visit the Papageno foundation in Sibiu to oversee the delivery of the goods and to participate in one of Papageno’s projects.

In addition to collecting the items listed above, we encourage you to donate to KPMG’s Inspiration Grants by clicking on “Donate” near the top of our project page.

Thank you for supporting our project. For more information on Papageno, go to www.verein-papageno.ch.

They have cars, too

Doug made me take pictures of all the mules and buggies we saw. Altogether, I took over 10 until I gave up...we had seen enough. Here is Doug's favoriteMore

All the houses are crooked

Many of the houses are crooked and many look like ghost towns. When I asked why, I was told that the government instructed the banks to immediately cease granting loans to people to build their houses in 2008. If you were building a house (and there was lots of construction), you were no longer able to continue drawing on the committed loans in o ...More

Our hosts - special people

When you describe someone as "special", this can be interpreted in many ways. Indeed, the people who have decided to dedicate their lives to supporting Papageno are special. I got the impression that they were doing fine in Switzerland, but ... for some reason decided it was time to leave and do something else. Life in CH was going nowhere. In ...More

Contradictions everywhere

The Papageno Stiftug tries to do a lot with very little. One initiative is to build a kind of old folks home for needy older (ladies, I believe). While Papageno is just trying to spend some CH100,000 for this facility, the government has come up with its own plans and these would call for nearly CHF1.2 million for the same facility. It would be ...More

It's hard to give stuff away - fairly

Collecting clothes in Switzerland was the easy part. But try getting them to Romania and then distributing them fairly. The Papageno Stiftung receives 10 truckloads (large 40 tonners) of clothes, foodstuffs, etc. every year. These have to be shipped - across borders. Then sorted - in a "logistics center" (just a house with a couple of barns - ve ...More
